Our neighborhood began as an idea by Walter Bryson, friends to John and Mable Ringling.

When the Ringlings decided to make Sarasota their seasonal home in the 1910s, the city was still in its infancy.

As a result, they had a wide selection of the area's choicest real estate available to them.

They picked what we now call IBSS as a place to call home.

Sapphire Shores Beginnings

In the 1920's John and Mable selected the town's northern shore to build Cà d'Zan. This beautiful setting was known for its natural beauty and wonderful views of the bay.

At the time, Ringling also created a basin just to the south of his mansion as a turn-around and harbor for his large yachts. Today you can sit at Sapphire Shores Park and enjoy one of the prettiest bay-fronts in Sarasota.

IBSS was developed during the Florida housing boom in the 1920s. Sapphire Shores had mostly Mediterranean-style houses which became the homes for many of Ringling's family members and friends. Later, others, including Sarasota school of architecture leader Ralph Twitchell, built houses here as well.

The abundance of older buildings in Sapphire Shores reflects Sarasota's varied architectural history.

There is the Harvey house, built in 1925 by William Harvey, the son-in-law of developer Walter Bryson, who first conceived of Sapphire Shores.
